Job Summary:

What could be more important than saving lives? In this occupation you may supervise, lead or perform work to control and extinguish fires. You may rescue persons endangered by fire and reduce or eliminate potential fire hazards. Additional responsibilities may include: training personnel in fire protection and prevention; operating fire communications equipment; developing and implementing fire protection and prevention plans, procedures and standards; and advising on improvements to structures for better fire prevention. Qualifications:

Applicants must meet the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualifications requirements (http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/SEC-IV/B/GS0000/0081.HTM) and Department of Defense (DoD) certification requirements (http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/605506m.pdf).

Positions may require applicants to possess or obtain other types of licenses and certification, such as State drivers license and/or EMT certification.

You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.

How You Will Be Evaluated:

Eligible applicants will be evaluated based on a comparison of the position requirements against the quality and extent of the experience or related education as reflected in their resume. Candidates are encouraged to ensure work experiences clearly show possession of knowledge of the subject matter pertinent to the position, the technical skills to successfully perform the duties of the position, and the ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Special Retirement Provisions For Firefighters. A firefighter in a primary/rigorous position (primary duties directly connected with the control and extinguishment of fires) who transfers to a qualifying secondary position (e.g., Fire Protection Inspector, Lead Firefighter, Supervisory Firefighter, etc.) must meet the transfer requirements to continue eligibility for coverage under the special retirement provisions. The transfer requirements are: moves directly from a primary/rigorous to a secondary position and is continuously employed in a secondary position since moving from a rigorous position without a break in service exceeding 3 days. In addition, firefighters under Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) must complete 3 years of service in a rigorous position prior to transfer.

Other Information:

Pay retention may be granted to the selectee recruited outside the area who accepts a downgrade when there is no step in the lower grade that equals or exceeds his/her current rate of basic pay.

Some positions may have promotion potential to a higher grade than the grade at which filled.

Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
