The appointment is limited to ICTR. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Language Services Section, and the direct supervision of the Head, Interpretation Unit, the Interpreter/Translator will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Service up to seven Court sessions/meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration, of various ICTR Chambers/United Nations bodies; 2. Provide interpretation, into French of speeches or statements given in English; 3. Perform as necessary English to French translation as assigned by the Chief of Section or his representative; 4. May occasionally be assigned to sensitive meetings; 5. May function as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting; 6. May perform other related duties, as required.

Planning and Organizing: Willingness to constantly improve linguistic skills and monitor own work; good documentary and terminological preparation for meetings; punctuality and readiness to travel and to keep flexible working hours. Technological Awareness: Sound computer skills, including proficiency in contemporary word processing software.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
University Degree in relevant modern language or law and an Interpretation Degree, Certificate, or Diploma from a recognized Interpretation Training School; must have passed the official ICTR competitive Examination for English to French Interpreters/Translators.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of work experience in an international organization is required.
Languages
English and French are the working language of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). For the post advertised, a perfect command of French and an excellent knowledge of English are required.
Other Skills
Proven ability to interpret from or into other UN official languages will be an asset. A broad cultural background and a good written style. Initiative, judgement, thoroughness and ability to maintain harmonious working relationships in a multinational team. Demonstrated ability to perform written translation work from English to French. Knowledge in the use of computer applications.
